PFLAG Norwalk -- Guidelines for a Safe Meeting
In order to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where we can talk freely about sensitive personal issues, we ask everyone to listen respectfully when others are sharing. Interrupting, judgmental comments, giving advice or extensive questioning can feel intrusive. When we listen, we remember that everyone is at a different point in their journey. Everyone is invited to share, but no one is ever required to disclose personal details.
When it is our turn, we are encouraged to relate to others, but to focus on our own experience –both our challenges and our hope. We try to avoid making sweeping generalizations such as “all trans/LGBTQ+ people,” “everyone should do a certain thing,” and so on. Please remember that mental health issues or treatments are particularly sensitive areas and that comments meant to be helpful can come across as critical or judgmental.
None of us are here as professionals. Meeting leaders and Board members are volunteers whose families have been helped by participation in PFLAG, and we do our best to pay it forward. Our hope is to open hearts and minds and create a more accepting world where our loved ones will be safe and thrive.
Although PFLAG National is dedicated to education, advocacy and support of and for the LGBTQ+ community, our monthly meetings focus on support of, for, and with those family and friends who are dedicated to supporting their LGBTQ+ loved ones.
If you are participating virtually, we ask you to refrain from recording, taking screen shots or sharing any content on social media. Please mute yourself when you are not speaking.
When the meeting is over, please keep the names of the attendees, and any personal details, in confidence.
